53 EUTM-S members of the mission from Italy, Serbia, Spain and Sweden were awarded with the Common Security & Defense Policy (CSDP) service medal.

The ceremony, held at the International Campus, was attended by, among others, the Italian Ambassador to Somalia, H.E. Mario Daccò Coppi, the Head of the European Union Capacity Building Mission in Somalia (EUCAP), Dr. Kauko Aaltomaa, the US Military Attaché, Colonel Nicholas Gregoire, the United Kingdom Defense Attaché, Navy Captain James Edwards , the Italian Defense Attaché, Navy Captain Mario De Rosa, and representatives of the missions operating in Somalia such as the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), the United States Military Assistance Group in Somalia (MAG-S), the United Kingdom’s Operation Tangham and the Turkish Military Academy (TURKSOM).

In his speech, Gen. Poli, thanked the guests for their presence, shared the memory of one of his relatives who, serving as an officer in the Italian army during the First World War, distinguished himself courageously, deserving a medal for military valor.

The CSDP medals were awarded by the EUTM-S Mission Force Commander, General Poli, the Deputy Force Commander, Colonel Karlquist and the Chief of Staff, Colonel Gonzalez Segura: the last two mentioned officers were also awarded during the ceremony.

The Latin words on the back of the medal, “Pro Pace Unum” (meaning “United for Peace”), summarize the essence of the mission, aimed at supporting Somalia and its institutions. The EUTM-S mission began in 2010 and will complete its eighth mandate by 2024. EUTM-S is strengthening its support to the Somali Security Forces by delivering specific mentoring, advice and capacity building in the area of training.
