Mogadishu, July 5, 2020 – The closing ceremony of the Counter-Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) awareness course took place, this morning, at the General Dhagabadan Training Center 2 (GDTC-2).

The C-IED course that trained about 25 soldiers of the Somali National Army (SNA), members of the 32nd Battalion, started on 13 June at the GDTC-2 through video lessons and using multimedia equipment carried out by the EUTM-S Headquarters.

The course was performed to provide theoretical and procedural preparation regarding “route search” activities to 4 teams of the mentioned Battalion. Among the subjects, the students learnt the component parts and operating chain, the ground sign awareness, the vulnerable area identification procedures, the vulnerable point domination procedures, the incident control procedures and the team route search procedures. The course was also carried out with the cooperation of UNMAS (United Nations Mine Action Service) personnel which conducted lessons in favour of trainees from our Headquarters

The ceremony was attended by the Mission Force Commander, Brigadier General Antonello DE SIO, who followed the event on video tele-conference from the EUTM-S Headquarters with the Head of Trainers Team, LTC Hernandez ZACARIAS and the Counter IED Chief of Branch, Major Ivan PALADINI.

On site were present,  the GDTC-2 Commander, Brigadier General SANEY, the SNAF General Staff Head of J7, Colonel AHMED, the SNAF General Staff Director of Training, Colonel BUNEY and the Commander of 32nd Battalion, LTC HIRSI.

During his speech, BG DE SIO underlined the fundamental importance of this kind of training for SNA as in today’s conflicts IED plays a pivotal role in the operating environment and force protection will remain a paramount priority. Furthermore, he congratulated the GDTC-2 Staff and the participants for the commitment shown during the training, hoping to have soon the opportunity to restart the activities like before the pandemic crises.
