Mogadishu, 02nd October 2019 – The Spanish Ambassador of Kenya, Somalia and Uganda, H.E. Javier García De Viedma Bernaldo De Quirós, was in Mogadishu, as part of his visit to the country’s capital, to meet the EUTM-S Mission Force Commander, Brigadier General Antonello De Sio, and to attending the ceremony of the Spanish National Day organized by the Spanish Contingent. EUTM-S compound, where, at the presence of some other Ambassadors, the EUCAP Head of Mission, guests and the personnel belonging to the Mission, the celebration was held.
The Spanish National Day is an important holiday across all the country. Officially called “Fiesta Nacional”, it is also the “Dia de la Hispanidad” (Hispanic Day) that commemorates the day Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas in 1492 and it is normally celebrated with a military parade along Madrid’s Paseo de la Castellana. The culminations of the event is a fly-by from the Spanish Air Force Team, who release a stream of crimson and gold smoke to replicate Spain’s National Flag across the sky.
Spain contributes to the Mission with high level professional Officers and Warrant Officers, covering pivotal and fundamental roles in the Headquarter, performing advising, mentoring and training activities. EUTM-S is grateful to Spain because its personnel is helping to strengthen the Federal Government and the Defence institutions in Somalia.
