From 29th to 31st January 2024, the European Union Training Mission in Somalia (EUTM-S) hosted the first International Partner Training Conference (IPTC) at the International Campus in Mogadishu.
Key international partners as the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), the African Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), the US Embassy in Mogadishu, the US Military Assistance Group in Somalia (MAG-S), the Türkiye military operation TURKSOM, the United Kingdom Operation Tangham, as well as the Somali Army General Staff participated.
The partners shared training information and discussed how to support the training command and how to better support the Somali Armed Forces.
Gen. Fulvio Poli, Mission Force Commander of EUTM-S, welcomed all participants, underlining the importance of coordinating training activities to provide more specialized and tailored courses for the Somali Security Forces during the conference. The conference lasted 3 days and the participants had the opportunity to inform about their training activities, discuss with other stakeholders, working in thematic workgroups, visiting the facilities of the General Dhagadaban Training Center and seeing the EUTM-S trainers at work, sharing experiences and opinions.
The conference represented the first step towards improving quality, coordination and integration of all training activities in favor of the Somali Security Forces.
EUTM-S works to support Somalia National Armed Forces (SNAF), in close coordination with the Somali authorities. Since 2010, when the mission started, EUTM-S has trained more than 9.000 Somali Officers, NCOs and troops and formed more than 600 SNAF instructors.
As part of the European Union’s integrated approach that encompasses political, security, humanitarian and development actions, EUTM-S provides strategic advice to the Somali Ministry of Defense, when required, and to the SNAF General Staff, education and mentoring to NCOs and Officers, as well as operational training to SNAF units and specialists.
