Mogadishu, June 2nd, 2020 – The ceremony for the 74th Anniversary of the Italian Republic took place this morning in the International Campus of Mogadishu.
The day commemorates the institutional referendum held by universal suffrage in 1946, in which the Italian people were called to the polls to decide on the form of government between Republic and Monarchy.
At the ceremony took part, among the few present, the Mission Force Commander, Brigadier General DE SIO, the Italian Ambassador, H.E. VECCHI, the US Ambassador, H.E. YAMAMOTO, the EUCAP Head of Mission, Mr Reynolds, the Italian Defence Attaché, Capt (N) MAZZOCCA, the US Director MCC, Colonel HEFNER, the Commander of the Italian National Support Element, Lieutenant Colonel DETTORI and the Senior National Representatives of the EUTM-S Contingent.
During the short ceremony, held in compliance with the COVID-19 rules, the symbolic flag-raising was carried out and the message of the President of the Italian Republic was read.
In his brief speech, the Italian Ambassador addressed a heartfelt thanks to all the Italian personnel involved in the various missions in Somalia and to all the partners who intervened for the celebration of this Anniversary.
Italy employs the largest number of personnel in the Mission, covering several key roles.
EUTM Somalia directly supports the build-up of the Somali National Army (SNA) through Advising, Training activities and Mentoring activities, helping to strengthen the Federal Government and Defence Institutions of Somalia.
