Mogadishu, June 4th, 2020 – The ceremony for the Finnish Flag Day took place this morning in the International Campus of Mogadishu.

The day commemorates the Finnish Defence Forces, through the years 1919-1939 a similar day was celebrated on 16th May called the Flag Day of the Army. In 1942, the birthday of Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, Marshal of Finland, started to be celebrated nationally and in 1950, the name of the celebration was changed to the Flag Day of the Finnish Defence Forces.

At the ceremony took part, among the few present, the Mission Force Commander, Brigadier General DE SIO, the Senior National Representatives of the EUTM-S Contingent and a representation of the Finnish contingent.

During the short ceremony, held in compliance with the COVID-19 rules, the symbolic flag-raising was carried out.

Finland contributes to the Mission with several professional personnel, covering fundamental roles in the Headquarter, performing priority Mentoring and Training activities.

EUTM Somalia directly supports the build-up of the Somali National Armed Forces through Advising, Training activities and mentoring activities, helping to strengthen the Federal Government and Defence Institutions of Somalia.
