Mogadishu, June 10th, 2020 – The ceremony for the celebration of the Portuguese National Day took place this morning in the International Campus of Mogadishu, Headquarters of the European Union Training Mission in Somalia.
Portugal day, officially known as “the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities” memorializes the death of the poet and international literary icon Luís Vaz de Camões. Camões wrote the “Lusiads”, Portugal’s national epic celebrating the country’s history and achievements, focused on the Portuguese explorations in the 16th Century, which greatly expanded the influence of Portugal. The poem is considered to be the most important piece of Portuguese literature and has become a symbol for the glory of the Portuguese Nation.
At the ceremony took part, among the few present, the Mission Force Commander, Brigadier General Antonello DE SIO, the EUCAP Head of Mission, Mr. Chris Reynolds, the Portuguese Senior National Representative and the Representatives of each EUTM-Somalia contributing Countries.
During the short ceremony, held in compliance with the COVID-19 rules, the symbolic flag-raising was carried out.
Portugal contributes to the Mission with several professional personnel, covering fundamental roles in the Staff of the Headquarters.
EUTM Somalia directly supports the build-up of the Somali National Armed Forces through Advising, Training and Mentoring activities, helping to strengthen the Federal Government and Defence Institutions of Somalia.
