Mogadishu, 18th January 2019 – Lt. Gen. Esa PULKKINEN, Director of the EU Military Planning and Conduct Capability (DMPCC) and Commander of the European Union Training Mission Somalia (EUTM Somalia), paid a visit to the European contingent in Mogadishu between the 15th and the 17th of January, welcomed by the Mission Force Commander (MFCdr), Brig. Gen. Matteo SPREAFICO.

During the visit Lt. Gen. Esa PULKKINEN had the opportunity to meet several prominent stakeholders. His meetings with Somali institutions included the Somali Minister of Defense Hon. Ali Mohamed HASSAN and the Somalia National Army Chief of Defense Gen. Dahir Adan ELMI. He also met with prominent members of the International Community, including the Deputy Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission for Somalia Hon. Simon MULONGO, the acting AMISOM Force Commander Maj. Gen. Charles TAI GITUAI, the head of the European diplomatic delegation Charge’ de Affaires Fulgenzio (Pencho) GARRIDO RUIZ, the head of the United Nations Support Office in Somalia Ms. Lisa FILIPETTO, the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa Deputy Commander B. Gen. Miguel CASTELLANOS and the Commander of the British Forces Somalia, “Operation TANGHAM” , Colonel John BAYNHAM.

The meetings have highlighted the strong cooperation that exists between all the actors operating in the country, emphasizing how coordination and mutual understanding is adding value to the support provided by the international community to the Federal Government of Somalia.

During his visit the EUTM Somalia Mission Commander had also the opportunity to address all the Mission’s personnel and commend them for their service.

EUTM Somalia aims to strengthen the federal government and the defense and security institutions in Somalia, using a three-pillar approach: training, mentoring and advising.
