MOGADISHU, March 7th 2020 – The Medal Parade of the European Union Training Mission Somalia (EUTM-S), European Union Capacity Building Mission (EUCAP) and Italian National Support Element (ITA-NSE) personnel took place at the new Mission Headquarters in the International Campus of Mogadishu.

The Common Security and Defence Policy Service Medal has been awarded to 54 members of EUTM Somalia hailing from Italy, Spain, Sweden, Finland, Great Britain, Serbia, Portugal and Romania to 12 of the civilian of the EUCAP Mission and to 24 members of ITA-NSE.

The EUTM-S Mission Force Commander Brigadier General Antonello DE SIO, the EUCAP Acting Head of Mission, Mr. Anssi MURTO, and the Italian NSE Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Licio DETTORI, handed over the CSDP Medals to their respective personnel who have completed the requirements.

At the ceremony took part, among others, the US Ambassador to Somalia, H.E. Mr. Donald YAMAMOTO, the Italian Ambassador, H.E. Mr. Alberto VECCHI and the Commander of AMISOM Sector 1, Brigadier General Richard OTTO. The Deputy European Ambassador, H.E. Ms Nicole MILLER, accompanied BG DE SIO, rewarding the US Director MCC Combined Joint Task Force of Horn of Africa, Colonel Eric HEFNER with the CSDP Service Medal.

During his speech, Brigadier General DE SIO highlighted the importance of the synergy between the military approach and the civilian capacity building, aspects that benefit the European Union’s Integrated Approach. He also underlined the consistence and dedication of the personnel, essential factors needed to reach the goal of reinforcing the EUTM-S role. Lastly the Mission Force Commander expressed his own appreciation to all the International Partners for their important cooperation.

EUTM Somalia will continue to support the building of inclusive, effective and efficient Ministry of Defence, Somali National Armed Forces General Staff and Somali National Army. The EUTM-S members assist the Somali Defence Institutions through its advising, mentoring and training activities.
