MOGADISHU, November 27th 2019 – The Medal Parade of the European Union Training Mission Somalia (EUTM-S) took place at the Mission Headquarters in the International Campus within Mogadishu International Airport.

The ceremony started with the awarding of the Common Security Defence Policy (CSDP) Medal for “Headquarters and Forces” by the Deputy Director of the EU Military Planning and Conduct Capability (DDMPCC), Major General Teodoro Erminio Maio, to the EUTM-S Mission Force Commander, Brigadier General Antonello De Sio.

The CSDP Service Medal for “Planning and Support” has been, subsequently, awarded by the Mission Force Commander, Brigadier General Antonello De Sio, to the Italian National Support Element Commander, LTC Licio Dettori, who has completed the requirements.

The two Generals have awarded other twenty-eight CSDP Medals to all the members of the Mission hailing from Italy, Finland, Great Britain, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.

At the ceremony took part, among others, the Ugandan Deputy Ambassador to Somalia, H.E. Mr. Nathan Mugisha, the AMISOM Deputy Force Commander in charge of Support and Logistics Major General George Aggrey Owinow, the Italian Deputy Ambassador, Mr. Fabio Massimo Ballerini, and the EUCAP Head of Mission, Mr. Chris Reynolds.

During his speech, the Mission Force Commander highlights the importance of the effort to support the growth of a reliable, accountable and affordable Somali National Army as an important part of the international comprehensive endeavour to Somalia.

In the final remarks Major General Maio thanked all the personnel for their service and commended all the Mission personnel for their great efforts to make a united and consistent European presence in Somalia.

At the end of the ceremony, an additional CSDP Medal for “Planning and Support” was awarded by the European Union Ambassador to Somalia, H.E. Mr Nicolas Berlanga Martinez, to the AMISOM Sector One Commander, Brigadier General Michael Kabango (Ugandan People’s Defence Force), for the continuous cooperation and the support provided to the EUTM Somalia.

EUTM Somalia will continue to support the building of inclusive, effective and efficient Defence Institutions, helping the Somali National Army Headquarters and The Somali Ministry of Defence to fuse together, promoting the political oversight and assisting with the development of key policy and legislative documents through its Advising, Mentoring and Training activities.
