MOGADISHU, September 28th 2019 – The Medal Parade of the European Union Training Mission Somalia (EUTM-S) took place at the Mission Headquarters in the International Campus within Mogadishu International Airport.

The Common Security and Defense Policy Service Medal has been awarded to forty-nine members of EUTM Somalia, hailing from Italy, Finland, Portugal, Serbia, Spain and Sweden, and to six members of the civilian “sister” Mission EUCAP.

An additional medal was awarded to the AMISOM Liaison Officer, Major Kaali Chemonges (Ugandan People’s Defence Force), for the excellent job performed and the cooperation assured during his employment.

The Mission Force Commander Brigadier General Antonello De Sio, the EUCAP Head of Mission Mr. Chris Reynolds and the Italian National Support Element Commander LTC Michele Giacalone handed over the CSDP Medals to their respective personnel who have completed the requirements.

At the ceremony took part, among others, the European Ambassador to Somalia, H.E. Nicolas Berlanga Martinez and the, AMISOM Sector 1 Commander, Brigadier General Michael Kabango.

During his speech, the Mission Force Commander highlighted the importance of the synergy between the military approach and the civilian capacity building: two important aspects that benefit the European Union’s Integrated Approach. He also underlined the consistence and dedication of the personnel, essential factors needed to reach the goal of reinforcing the EUTM-S role and enabling the effective support in favour of the Ministry of Defence, the Armed Forces and the Somali National Army. At the end of his speech Brigadier General De Sio expressed his own appreciation to all the International Partners for their cooperation and the synergies achieved.
