Brig. Gen. Roberto VIGLIETTA
Biographical Notes

Brigadier General Roberto VIGLIETTA assumed duty on February 27, 2022 as Mission Force Commander of EUTM Somalia.

BG Viglietta graduated from the Military Academy as an Infantry Officer in 1991.

He served in command and leadership positions at platoon and company level in the 6th Bersaglieri Regiment (Mech) and the 8th Bersaglieri Regiment (Mech) from 1993 to 1999. During this period he completed several operational tours in the Balkans. From 1999 to 2001 BG Viglietta was an instructor at the Officers Application School. He commanded the 1st Battalion, 82nd Infantry, “Pinerolo” Brigade (Mech), from 2011 to 2012. From 2015 until 2017 he was the 51st Commander of the 7th Bersaglieri Regiment. He deployed to Afghanistan’s Western Region in 2012 as Battalion Commander within Task Force Center and in 2016 as Task Force Commander. From June 2020 until assuming the current post, he was the Commandant of the Infantry School.

His staff positions include serving as staff officer on the Army General Staff (General and Financial Planning Division), as NATO desk officer on the Defense General Staff (Military Policy and Planning Division), as Executive Officer to the Deputy Chief of Defense General Staff and, on the Army General Staff (General Planning Division), as Chief Army Innovation Branch (which included Concept and Doctrine development and Lessons Learned). He also served as Staff Officer Plans on the J5 cell, Regional Command-West, Afghanistan.

BG Viglietta’s education includes a university degree from the Italian University (Political Science), Master Degrees from St.John’s University (Government and Politics), from the US Army School of Advanced Military Studies (Military Arts and Sciences in Theatre Operations) and from the Joint Services Staff College (Strategic and Military Studies).
