NEW ACHIEVEMENTS FOR THE STRAND 2A MILITARY COORDINATION EXECUTIVE MEETING

The Executive Meeting of the Strand 2A military coordination group took place on 21 May at the European Union Training Mission in Somalia headquarter in Mogadishu.

Strand 2A is a mechanism whose core responsibility is to deliver practical and operational support to develop the Somali Ministry of Defence and National Armed Forces.

The meeting was chaired by MG Abdiweli Jama Hussein Chief of Defence Forces and saw the participation of BG Hassan Yusuf SNA Reform Committee, BG Pietro Addis EUTM-S Mission Force Commander, Col Nelson (US) Dir MCC (for DCG-S), Col Maundrell COMBRITFOR, Col Kalin Comd TURKSOM and Lt Col L’Estrange (UK) Strand 2A Core PDT J5 Plans.

After months of hard work as an international team – the FGS/SNA, Turkey, the EU, the UK, and the US – with common interests in East Africa, the CDF was able to make some significant strategic decisions.

The significant impact was to consolidate the General Staff under one Chief of Staff for efficiency and effectiveness, and to establish the position of a Land Forces Commander.

Moreover, during the last executive meeting, 4 additional new features were approved:

  • the redaction of a common training syllabus for SNA training by international partners;
  • the regulation of Code of Conduct for SNAF;
  • the revision of future SNAF structure for 2027 and beyond;
  • the definition of Selection criteria and Career Pathway for Officers and NCOs.

This is a strategic and positive step forward for the Federal Government of Somalia and the Somali National Army and comes as a result of a lot of hard work and positive international cooperation.
