The 20th of August has multiple names in Hungary. It is most importantly the State Foundation Day of Hungary. To find out the reason behind this name, we must go back almost a thousand years in history: it was on this day in 1038 that the first Christian king of Hungary, St. Stephen I died, five days after he offered the country for Virgin Mary on his deathbed. He became the first canonized saint in Hungary’s history. He was also the monarch who turned Hungary into a legitimate Christian state after about a century of Paganism, so he can be considered the state-founder of the country.
Festa della Repubblica (Republic Day) is the Italian National Day and Republic Day, which is celebrated on 2nd June each year. The day commemorates the institutional referendum held by universal suffrage in 1946, in which the Italian people were called to the polls to decide on the form of government, following the Second World War and the fall of Fascism. On 2 June 1946, a referendum on the monarchy led to the establishment of the Italian republic, and Italy adopted a new constitution on 1 January 1948. Male members of the royal family were sent into exile because of their association with the fascist regime, and were only allowed to return to their country in 2002.
Great Union Day (Romanian: Ziua Marii Uniri, also called Unification Day) occurring on December 1, is the national holiday of Romania. It marks the unification of Transylvania, Bessarabia, and Bukovina with the Romanian Kingdom in 1918. This holiday was set after the Romanian Revolution and commemorates the assembly of the delegates of ethnic Romanians held in Alba Iulia, which declared the Union of Transylvania with Romania.
On June 6, 1523 AD, Gustav Eriksson Vasa was elected king of Sweden after having led an uprising to break the union between Sweden, Denmark and Norway. Even if the list of known Swedish monarchs begins with Ivar Vidfamne (Ivar Widefathom, 970 – 995 AD), Gustav Vasa is often regarded as the founder of Sweden, and June 6 is celebrated as the National Day of Sweden
